The Australian 2015 ‘summer of tennis’ calendar offers a variety of ATP & WTA tournaments in the lead-up to the Australian Open and include:
The Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open (AGLO) – Friday 16 – Sunday 18 January – Sydney sits nicely in the calendar and takes advantage of being held during the APIA International Sydney and on the weekend before the first week of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Another reason for this move to January, and to a new surface, is the difficulties in tournament scheduling experienced at the two previous AGLOs in 2013 and 2014 with the wetter weather in February on the plexi-cushion surface. There was also the difficulty in not having access to SOPTC courts on Saturday mornings and the lack of available plexi-cushion secondary venues. In general, as the tournament has grown over the years, we have struggled with numerous venues including Rockdale and Parklands, to find access to courts on Saturday mornings during school terms. We trust that the move to January dates will open up the schedules and make for a more enjoyable tournament experience for all.
Tennis Sydney will still be running a tennis event during the Mardi Gras Festival in February 2015 and are calling on Members if they have any suggestions for how we participate in and celebrate Mardi Gras. You may send your ideas to email@example.com
Entry for the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open 2015 will open in late June with early bird pricing available until 30 November 2014. So start letting your contacts from inter-state and overseas know about the dates for January 2015.
