Tennis Sydney 2012 - the year in review

2012 got off to a flying start for Tennis Sydney with the announcement of a sponsoring partnership with the Moore Park View Hotel (mpV). The support from the mpV would allow us to offer new programs to Members and give the Club a ‘home’ for many of our functions throughout the year.

A large group of Members travelled to Melbourne for the VicTennis Midsumma Tournament bringing home the champions trophies in A, B and C grades.

The first of the year’s Grand Slam tipping comps was run and Victoria Azarenka and Novak Djokovic triumphed at the Australian Open.

The mid-week Summer Comp commenced on the 2nd comprising 4 divisions playing at 4 venues. Due to the one of the wettest summer/autumns on record, this comp will go down in the books as one of the longest Tennis Sydney has held with the finals originally scheduled for late April. (See June)

We held our first function for the year at the mpV on the 11th where the 2011 Spring Comp trophies were presented; our calendar of events for the year was announced and the Mardi Gras Tournament draws were released to eager players.

Tennis Sydney participated in the Sports Village at Mardi Gras Fair Day on the 12th with a rotating cast of Members doing duty on a very, very hot day in Victoria Park.

The Mardi Gras Tournament was held at Rockdale 17-19 February attracting 182 players competing in 12 events. Our final function was held at the Taxi Club on the 18th. The venue closed permanently a couple of months later ending a long association between the two Clubs.

After a busy start to the year, this month marched on steadily with summer comp (occasionally); a fun drinks evening at mpV on the 11th and continued strong numbers at Sunday Social each week.

The first of our Club Doubles Tournaments for the year was held at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on the 15th. 40 teams competed on the hard courts and the success of this day laid the foundations for the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open 2013.

The Tennis Sydney AGM was held at Parklands on the 22nd.

The Summer Comp continued on…

…and on and on…

With benefit of the mpV sponsorship the first round of our subsidised group coaching commenced at Parklands with the very popular coach Matt. 3 groups of 4 over 6 weeks completed a ‘Building the Tactical Game Program’.

On the 2nd we held another function at mpV to present almost all the trophies for the Summer Comp. The Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open 2013 was also officially launched and announced to Members and the evening was rounded out with a poker tournament.

Another Grand Slam tipping comp concluded with three Members picking Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova as the French Champions for 2012.

The mid-week Winter Swingers commenced and the final final of the Summer Comp was played on the 15th June – 20 weeks after the start of competition back in February!

Tennis Sydney entered into a partnership with the Star Observer as official Media Partner for the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open.

The Wimbledon Championships concluded with Serena Williams and Roger Federer taking out the titles and a couple of Members sharing the win in the tipping comp.

Wet weather saw events postponed during this month but our annual Bake-Off was held at Parklands on the 22nd with celebrity judges Vik & Gabs.

Several Members represented the Club at the Amazon Tennis Trivia night on the 15th.

Andy Murray and Serena Williams claimed the gold medals at the London Olympics and backed up their wins by taking out the US Open Championships a few weeks later in New York which also completed our Grand Slam tipping comps for the year.

Entry for the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open 2013 opened on the 6th.

The Lawn Doubles Classic took place at Marrickville on the 9th where 60 players competed in three divisions. The day was complemented by a round of Sunday Social at the same venue.

The mid-week Winter Swingers concluded for 55 players across four venues in five divisions and the Spring mid-week comp commenced on the 27th for 72 players.

Our first live draw for seedings and first round matches for the Peter Deacon Spring Tournament was held at mpV on the 1st.

The Peter Deacon Tournament was played at Illawarra Tennis Centre from 5th -7th with 139 players competing in 12 events. A successful player’s party was held on the 6th at the Altamont Hotel.

The Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) officially sanctioned the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open (AGLO) as one of their five MASTER SERIES Tournaments for 2013.

The Winter Comp trophies were presented at the mpV on the 17th.

Serena Williams defeats Maria Sharapova to claim the season-ending WTA Tour Championships in Istanbul. In London, Novak Djokovic claims the ATP year-end championships after prevailing against Roger Federer.

The Czech Republic wins both the Fed Cup (defeating Serbia) and Davis Cup (defeating Spain).

Our annual World AIDS Day Tournament was held at Cintra Park on the 2nd. 64 players competed in the hugely popular mpV Compass Singles event which was complemented by our end-of-year fundraising raffle.

The Tennis Sydney Xmas Party was held on the 8th at the Tilbury Hotel where the Oscars for players and sportsmanship awards were presented.

The early bird for entries to the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open closed on the 9th with 174 players registered at that date to compete next February.

Victoria Azarenka ends the year as the WTA #1 player and Novak Djokovic tops the ATP.

The Tennis Sydney Spring mid-week finished almost on time and the last Sunday Social for the year is scheduled for the 23rd.

The Honour Roll for 2012 is now updated with all the Champions in our tournaments and competitions. (Check the results tab, once you have logged in).

We also congratulate our Members who had success in other competitions and tournaments throughout the year including Badge, international GLTA tournaments and other Tennis NSW and Tennis Australia events.

Our fundraising for the year through the Grand Slam tipping competitions, raffles, poker night, the Bake-off, Compass and doubles days has resulted in a final amount of $3565.00 to be donated to charity. Thank you to all who have contributed not just their donations but their time, effort and talents in achieving this terrific result.

It’s been a busy 2012. We hope you have enjoyed all the tournaments, competitions, Sunday play and social functions Tennis Sydney have organised and that you have played some great tennis; had a lot of laughs, and made new friends along the way.

It’s now time to relax and re-charge the batteries for what is shaping up as a bigger year in 2013 for Tennis Sydney and our Members and friends.

Thank you for your continued support and participation.
