The Committee saw an opportunity for an Australasian event in 2013 in Sydney to complement the just announced Asia-Pacific Outgames for May 2014 in Darwin. The Open also fits well within the wider gay and lesbian tennis and world sports calendar in the coming years. Securing Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre (SOPTC) as the venue will ensure our Members and visiting players experience world-class tennis facilities that will prepare them for future regional and international tournaments. The participation target is 220 players across all grades and events in line with GLTA rules.
The Australasian Gay & LesbianOpen has been officially sanctioned by the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) and we will be leveraging our membership to the GLTA to promote the event to the worldwide gay and lesbian tennis network. We will also be working with The Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association (GLISA) – Asia Pacific, governing body for the Asia-Pacific Outgames, to ensure that we increase our participants from the Asia-Pacific region.
The Tennis Sydney Committee is currently applying for NSW Government funding through the International Sporting Events Program (ISEP) through the Office of Communities – Sport and Recreation. The funding sought is for venue and promotion/advertising costs and if successful will allow us to enhance the event in other areas for both Members and inter-state/ international players. Regardless of the funding outcome, the Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open has been costed and budgeted to proceed.
One of the strengths of Tennis Sydney is the diversity of our Membership and we will be appealing to you to help promote the event to your friends, colleagues and other Clubs you are associated with. We will be developing a dedicated Australasian Gay & Lesbian Open 2013 tournament site within www.tennissydney.org.au and a series of promotional flyers that can be downloaded from the site to help communicate the event. We are also engaging with the Star Observer to develop both print and online advertising campaigns.
We look forward to announcing more details in the near future and trust you will see this event as a terrific opportunity for yourself and for Tennis Sydney. Thank you for your continued support and please save the dates in your calendar now. Entry will open in early August.
The Peter Deacon Spring Tournament will still be held at the Illawarra Tennis Centre, Rockdale – 5-7 October 2012.
